In the Classroom

Cal Shakes partners with teachers to create a culture of lifelong learning. Teachers and students alike love our in-school programs, with arts-based education that yields powerful results and strongly engaged classrooms.

Inside and Out

Cal Shakes’ teaching artists not only teach to students around the Bay Area—they learn how to be better teachers themselves.

Back to Basics

"As students tried on their lines for the first time, young voices began to grow louder and braver around the room."

Our teachers are students, too.

We partnered with Circle Up Education, an organization whose primary focus is Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Training for Classroom Teachers.

ONLINE CLASSES

While learning at home, it’s vital that our students are fully participating and engaged while rising to meet the challenges of remote learning. Cal Shakes online theater skills classes are designed to give students (ages 11-18)  the opportunity to continue to develop their craft as artists, while exploring their own experience of this current moment through creative expression.

Starting in May 2020, Cal Shakes team of highly trained professional teaching artists will offer classes in: Acting & Improvisation, Movement, Vocal Conditioning, Text & Scene Analysis, Dialects, Dramaturge & Script Analysis, and Stage Combat! Each class is broken into 6 one-hour sessions to be held weekly. Try the first session for $15 per hour or sign up for the entire series of 6 sessions for $75. Interested in multiple courses? Pair 3 classes (18 hours of learning) for $225.

RESIDENCIES

Residencies are two or more workshops on a given subject. Our teaching artists partner with classroom teachers in core curriculum subjects such as English and History, using arts-based approaches that support state-mandated curriculum and teacher professional development. We can also partner with teachers in theater-related subjects like Acting and Stage Combat in our Theater Residencies. Appropriate for grades 4-12, residencies consist of eight to ten hours of instruction over several weeks. Prices start at $200 per workshop.

WORKSHOPS

We offer customizable workshops for your students in a variety of theatrical skills, including acting, movement, Shakespearean text, voice, stage combat, improvisation, clowning, and physical comedy and others. Prices start at $200 per workshop.

AFTER-SCHOOL

We also offer after-school programs for first grade and up: short & sweet samplings of many aspects of theater including acting, physical comedy, improvisation, as well as Shakespeare.
