Audition/Submission Policy

California Shakespeare Theater is a LORT-B level theater and primarily hires actors who are members of Actors’ Equity Association. Local, non-union actors are primarily hired as understudies or as Supplemental Extras. Casting takes place October through February for the upcoming season. Auditions for individual productions are by invitation only, and Generals for both non-AEA and AEA actors are held in the fall. Generals are announced on the AEA and Theatre Bay Area websites, as well as the Cal Shakes Artists Network group on Facebook. All are invited to join this group to receive audition updates. We also attend Theatre Bay Area General Auditions, which are usually held in January/February.

Please note: Due to department capacity, we are unable to hold individual auditions outside of these times. If you still would like to submit your headshot and resume for us to keep on file, please email us at casting@calshakes.org. In the subject line, please use the following format: “Full Name, Equity status.” For example: “Jane Doe, non-AEA.”

We do not currently accept play submissions.


Upcoming Auditions

General Auditions and EPAs for Cal Shakes’ 2017 season have already passed. We held our 2017 General Auditions in Berkeley, CA from October 7-10, 2016 and our 2017 EPAs in New York City on October 31, 2016.

We will be holding Bay Area General Auditions for our 2018 season in the fall of 2017.
