2023 Season: Frequently Asked Questions

Returning to the Bruns!

We are so excited to have you back at the Bruns and to share our beloved venue with other organizations! Things may look a little different since your last visit and you may have questions. Below you’ll find answers to a few that we get the most.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ll continue to update this page, as state and county COVID guidelines change and we update our protocols to ensure your wellbeing. Thank you for your patience!  If you have further questions please email info@calshakes.org.

Tickets for At The Bruns

Tickets are now on sale! Learn more about the At the Bruns series shows  and book your tickets here Our performance partners for the 2023  seasons series will be handling their own ticketing.

The Bruns will look a little different this year. Since our At the Bruns performances partners are handling their own ticketing this year, and there is no subscription or membership this year. Seat choice is not controlled by Cal Shakes (except for Good Medicine: A Night of Native Stand up). Each event is produced independently, and we do not share a box office.

Subscriptions Credits

Not yet. As soon as tickets are on sale, we will let you know how to use your credit. In the meantime, you are more than welcome to use your credit towards Good Medicine: A Night of Native Stand Up since Cal Shakes is doing the ticketing for that event.

At this time we are not directly transferring 2020 credit to 2022. However, if you don’t use all of your credit this season, we can transfer the remaining balance to a gift certificate which can be used next year. You may also turn the rest of your credit into a tax-deductible donation or request a refund.

Unfortunately, you cannot use your subscription credit for non-Cal Shakes events.

At the Bruns

First time at the Bruns? Learn more about directions and our free shuttle from BART. Check the schedule before planning your trip. Once the Orinda BART stops running, the free shuttle will take patrons to Rockridge BART where it is easier to get an Uber/Lyft.

Yes, we will have a golf cart available for those who need support getting up the hill to the theater. Learn more about accessibility at the Bruns here.

The cafe will be open for most events and will not accept cash payments in order to avoid additional interactions. Read more about the cafe safety protocols here.

There may be a picnicking charge for certain events. Please check so you avoid any surprises. Our cafe will also be opening, serving meals, beer and wine, snacks, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.

Shared Light Season

Artistic Director Eric Ting says it best: "At Cal Shakes, many of our performances take place—not in the relative anonymity of a dark theater—but under the sun. It’s a thing I’ve come to love (and miss dearly): actors and audience alike, in full view of one another, relinquishing the control we normally associate with the theater and instead navigating the complexity of each other's very real presence across the arc of a performance, cohabiting the shared light of our space.”

We know that outdoor space will continue to be a premium this year, so sharing our grounds with other organizations feels like exactly the thing we can and should be doing this summer.

We also know we need to continue to be flexible and monitor the mandates around reopening to ensure the safety of our artists, staff, and community. Instead of trying to squeeze four shows into a potentially shortened season, it felt right to share the space and safety open the Bruns to a larger community who may utilize the space differently.

Finally, theater has traditionally depended on early funding from those who subscribe in one year to launch productions for the following year. Because of COVID-19 that cycle of funding has been broken and we have to rebuild our production capital.
