If you’ve ever heard me ask the question, “How do we do this?”, then you know the answer, “Together!”
That’s how we do everything here at Cal Shakes and, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary this year, we’re reminded of how important that togetherness is. It’s how we got where we are today, it’s how we’ll get to where we’re going in the future and it’s why we put so much energy into cultivating meaningful and long-lasting relationships: with our audiences; with local schools, teachers, and students; and with you.
And it’s also why I’m so excited to invite you to our 2014 Summer Shakespeare Conservatories, in three awesome new locations.
Building on the success of our 12-year partnership with Orinda Intermediate School, I’m delighted to let you know that OIS is the new location for our Lamorinda-area Two- and Five-week Conservatories.
Looking ahead, we want to nurture new connections, too. Our Three-week Conservatory will be held at the prestigious Oakland School for the Arts, at its fabulous downtown Oakland campus; and we are thrilled to better serve our Oakland hills families with our other Two-week Conservatory at Zion Lutheran School in Piedmont.
Thanks to the best group of teachers, directors, and student actors in the Bay Area we anticipate beginning the next 40 years of Cal Shakes history with a summer full of friendships both old and new; building skills as performers and citizens; and creating excellent theater together.
I hope to see you there!
Director of Artistic Learning
"My daughter has gained invaluable insight into Shakespeare that could never be achieved in a classroom alone and that she applies to any live performance experience she is part of.” —Mom Melissa Abbe
"It's fun, inspiring, and packed with creativity. The teachers talk to you as if they're talking to an adult, which I like. It's really different from other camps in that way."
Cal Shakes’ Summer Shakespeare Conservatory for ages 8-18 offers a theater experience rooted in the same passion for artistic exploration and excellence that guides our award-winning Main Stage productions. We foster self-expression and artistic discipline to engage students in the theater-making process: In the dynamic study and physical experience of developing some of literature’s greatest characters, our students also develop their own.
Participants spend the morning playing and creating in a wide variety of theater disciplines, taught by working theater professionals.
Afternoons are spent in rehearsals. The experience culminates in Shakespeare performances for family and friends at the end of the program.
